Well if we are still talking about her heroine 162 years after its publication, that is evidence enough that she did it. Jane Eyre is one of the most popular classics especially due to her captivating and interesting heroine that is the centre of the novel. Her dilemmas and thoughts and feelings obviously do still occupy and touch people of our century. Some of them are love vs independence, passion vs morality, reality vs imagination.
She was in many ways an anti-Victorian woman. Charlotte Bronte seems to have created her as a vision of what a woman is and could be in some respects. She was different than the typical Victorian woman in the sincerity with which she expresses her thoughts, in her passionate way of relating her feelings, in the powerful self-respect and sense of equality to other people considered socially, financially or by their sex superior. She questioned the hypocrisy of the clergy, the haughtiness of aristocracy and talked about the restrain people (and women especially) suffered due to the unnatural conceptions of society about what an individual should be.
