Heritable variation results in differences in phenotypes arising from different alleles. Natural selection then acts on the most favourable phenotypes which are ';chosen'; as a result of conferring an advantage in the prevailing environment. In this sense the variation is edited out if not advantageous. Natural selection does not create the variation but acts on it.
